Gratitude Exercise
Think of three things that you have gratitude for in your life.
Imagine the “gift” you wish to leave for yourself, your family, and society. You may think of this as the single word that would be on a marker or a tombstone after you pass away. The word you choose will be the solitary message communicating this “gift” and reflecting your life’s purpose.
Here lies [your name]. She leaves behind to a grateful world the gift of ______.
You have completed a deep exploration of the components I feel are important for describing your purpose. It’s now time to assemble everything you’ve learned and put it to use. The following exercise addresses the issue of achievement. You will use this information and the knowledge you unearthed about yourself in the previous exercises to write your purpose statement. This statement is invaluable as your guide to living in the BestStress Zone.
Purpose and Achievement: The Ladder of Life Exercise
For highly driven women in the competitive workforce, it is common to confuse purpose with achievement. The following exercise should provide some clarification. Imagine a ladder with ten steps. The steps on the ladder stand for ten possible steps in your life. The tenth step stands for the best possible way of life for you, and the first step stands for the worst possible way of life for you. Keeping in mind that step ten represents your best way of life and step one represents your worst way of life, apply the number that applies best to each question.
1. What step number best describes where you are now ? __
2. What step number best describes where you were when you were twenty-one years old ? __
3. What step number best describes where you would like to be next year? __
4. What step number best describes where you expect to be next year? __
5. How disappointed would you be if you found out that you would never reach the step you identified in question 3?Very disappointed
Fairly disappointed
Slightly disappointed
Not at all disappointed
